Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Education Intent
At St Anne's, the teaching of Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development is integral to our Catholic ethos and is woven throughout our curriculum. We prioritise SMSC not as a standalone subject but as a vital component of every lesson and interaction within the school. This commitment is evident in our broad curriculum, which is further enhanced through extra-curricular activities, trips, and themed days. Subjects such as PSHE, RSE, and RE provide natural opportunities for SMSC development, while our behaviour expectations and worship practises reinforce these values daily.
We are dedicated to creating an environment that enables children to learn and develop to their full potential. We strive to ensure respect, forgiveness, and empathy for others, while also fostering acceptance of differences. Our aim is to encourage independence, resilience, cooperation, and collaborative working among our students. We also place great importance on helping pupils develop self-discipline and take responsibility for their actions.
To achieve these goals, we provide a curriculum that is engaging, exciting, meaningful, and rigorous. We stimulate questioning and challenge, ensuring that our approach is aspirational, creative, flexible, and responsive to the needs of our children. Our curriculum prioritises spiritual, moral, social, cultural, intellectual, and physical development, preparing our children to be informed citizens for today and beyond. We recognise the significance of academic achievement, personal development, and the well-being of every child in our school, providing a range of opportunities to support their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural growth.

Spiritual Development
Spiritual development at St Anne's focuses on fostering personal insight, values, meaning, and purpose. Children are encouraged to explore the fundamental British Value of respecting the values and beliefs of others. Our Catholic vision guides this spiritual development through prayer and Christian worship. We celebrate the diverse religious and non-religious beliefs that our pupils bring, fostering common human values and building spiritual capacities. We help our pupils understand themselves as unique individuals created in the image and likeness of God, encouraging them to reflect on "big questions" and develop a lifelong love of learning through curiosity and imagination.
Moral Development
Moral development is about understanding right from wrong and acting accordingly, which is deeply embedded in our culture statement: “If we show nothing else today, we will show Love, Responsibility, and Respect.” We are committed to promoting honesty and truthfulness, emphasising the importance of reconciliation, and encouraging respect for the rights and property of others. Our approach also involves helping children resolve conflicts and support one another in their daily interactions.
Social Development
Social development encompasses the ability to work effectively with others and participate actively in the community, embodying the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect. We foster teamwork and self-confidence, providing an environment that encourages responsibility both within the school and in society. Additionally, we teach the principles of the Equalities Act throughout our curriculum to promote understanding and respect for diversity.
Cultural Development
Cultural development involves understanding and appreciating various cultures and traditions. At St Anne's, we celebrate cultural diversity and promote tolerance by encouraging appreciation of our own and others’ cultural traditions. We celebrate different traditions through assemblies, curriculum activities, and outside events, weaving global education themes throughout our teaching to enrich our children's understanding of the world.
