The Purpose of Home Learning
Home learning strengthens the vital link between school and home. It provides opportunities to:
- Reinforce classroom learning
- Strengthen core skills such as reading, spelling, and number fluency
- Build independence, confidence, and readiness for future learning
- Support every child in reaching their full potential
Research shows that when parents engage in learning at home, children can make up to five months’ additional progress. Even small, regular activities have a powerful long-term impact.
Early Years (Nursery and Reception) Home Learning
Book Snuggle – Daily Story Time
Reading together each day builds vocabulary, imagination, comprehension, and early literacy skills. Families are encouraged to:
- Read a storybook with their child every day
- Encourage children to:
- Join in with repeated phrases
- Discuss new vocabulary
- Answer questions about the story
Early Reading Books
Reception children will take home:
- A phonics-matched reading book
- A library book for shared enjoyment
School Readiness Skills
Children in Nursery and Reception should continue developing:
- Independent eating
- Using the toilet independently
- Sitting to complete a short task
- Dressing themselves independently
Optional Seesaw Consolidation
Pupils may access Seesaw at home to revisit class content or practise skills if they wish.
Access to Additional Resources
Nursery and Reception parents may request additional resources to support learning at Touch Base Tuesday.
KS1 Home Learning (Years 1 and 2)
Core Home Learning
- Reading:
5–10 minutes daily to build fluency and comprehension. - Times Tables (TTRS):
Up to three short sessions per week for children who need it. - Spelling Practice:
5 minutes daily.
Optional Seesaw Consolidation
Children in KS1 may use Seesaw to consolidate class learning, practise skills, or revisit teaching materials.
Access to Additional Resources
Parents may request extra materials for support at Touch Base Tuesday.
KS2 Home Learning (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6)
Year 6 SAT practice and LBQ
Core Home Learning
- Reading:
10–15 three times per week (minimum)
=daily readers to sign
- Times Tables (TTRS):
Three short sessions per week where needed. - Spelling Shed and Sheet:
Three times per week.
Children who have already mastered certain skills may not require every practice session.
Optional Seesaw/Worksheet Consolidation
KS2 pupils can use Seesaw at home to revisit learning, practise skills, or extend their knowledge independently.
Catching Up After Absence
If a child is absent, they can access missed learning through the Seesaw calendar function.
This supports continuity, confidence, and a smooth return to class learning.
Individual Tasks and Targeted Support
Teachers may set personalised tasks through Seesaw to help children who need additional practice with:
- Times tables
- Spellings
- Reading or comprehension
- Specific learning targets
These tasks help children consolidate understanding and build confidence.
We understand that time at home is precious, and family life is busy. Home learning is deliberately short, purposeful, and manageable. By completing these small tasks each day, children reinforce key skills taught in school, deepen their understanding, and build strong learning habits.
Seesaw at St Annes
We are excited to introduce a new online learning platform called Seesaw at our school. Seesaw will support children’s learning and allow you to see what they have been doing in class. Your child’s home login details will be sent separately, along with instructions on how to access the platform. There is a useful instruction video below.

How we use Seesaw at St Annes
Communication with Parents
Reception and Nursery only: Seesaw will act as a two-way communication system, allowing parents to share insights and observations about their child’s learning at home. This supports the Early Years Framework’s emphasis on working together with parents to understand and support children’s learning (We will no longer be using ClassDojo as a communication tool).
Years 1–6: Seesaw will be used to share key messages and updates for your child’s class or whole school events. Please note that staff will not monitor Seesaw inboxes, so if you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please contact the school office or catch them at the beginning or end of the school day.
Catching Up After Absence
If your child is absent, they may use Seesaw to access missed learning using the calendar function. This allows them to consolidate what they missed at school and stay up to date with class activities.
Individual Tasks and Targeted Support
Teachers may set individual tasks on Seesaw to support specific learning needs. For example, if a child is struggling with a particular skill (e.g., times tables or spelling), a task will be shared for practice at home.
Sharing and Consolidating Learning
Seesaw allows children to share their learning with you and consolidate what they have been doing in class.
